About the Author: Mel Lewis, PGA of New Zealand

Mel’s family background in golf goes back generations. Most golfers will recognize some of his famous golfing ancestors: Allan Robertson, Golf’s first Professional

Thomas “Old Tom” Morris and his son “Young Tom Morris”. Both British “Open Championship” Winners

David “Auld Daw” Anderson, a St. Andrews Legend

Jamie Anderson three times British “Open Champion” 1877-1878-1879.

David Anderson, Mel’s great grandfather whose club-making company, D. Anderson & Sons, exported thousands of golf clubs and balls from St. Andrews, Scotland, to the United States of America from the end of the 19th into the 20th century.

Mel served a five-year apprenticeship as a maker of handmade golf clubs, becoming the last family member in five generations of club makers.

He became a member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of New Zealand in 1969.

From 1993 until 2007 he was the Golf Tournament Director at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana, California. A popular Los Angeles venue for Charity Fundraiser Tournaments.
