Silent and Live Auctions are Both Moneymakers
In my book
“Golf Tournaments 101 The Second Edition”, Chapter 3 highlights both silent and live auction, and has many suggestions on the auction items to collect for both of these fun and profitable activities.
Silent and Live Auctions
are a great way to bring additional interest into your tournament. If you’re not up to running your own auction, there are many companies specializing in golf tournament fundraising auctions. A web search should find one in your area….but before you consider hiring one; make sure you read all about auctions in my book. Also there are two downloadable Excel files to assist you. One to keep track of the items obtained. The other is a ready to print, single item bidding sheet.
The silent auction display should be set up while the golfers are out playing the tournament. Then opens for bidding from the time the first players start coming in off the course, it usually takes place until the tournament awards dinner begins. That period of time (the tournament’s “Happy Hour”) is usually about two hours. To give your auction more exposure, if possible make sure it’s set up as close as possible to the following activities:
- The After Golf Bar
- The area where all the score cards are collected and results posted for all to see.
This Group of Three Activities
will be the pre-dinner hub of activity, generating a really live and fun atmosphere. Players love nothing better than to have a drink with their team and friends, watch all the team names and scores being posted by the club’s tournament staff and checking out the silent auction items. Happy golfers buy more auction items!
Live auctions can be a lot of fun, and should be held during the awards dinner. Keep the live auction items to a minimum of say four or five at the very maximum. With too many items, time becomes a factor and tired golfers up and leave. From all the prizes collected for raffles and both the silent and live auctions, take the very best for the live auction. Don’t auction any low value items. Why? The chapter explains why.
Collecting Auction Items
Your committee that’s dedicated to making your fundraiser tournament a success has perhaps as long as one year to collect suitable auction items. Many tournaments have their supporters make beautiful gift baskets, filled with all kinds on interesting and tasty items. There’s a list of suggestions in the chapter for you to consider. On the high value end, perhaps a sponsor might supply a vacation for two.
you don’t have to run both auctions. If you feel more comfortable with just one, that’s fine. But do hold one or the other, they really are moneymakers.

A Final Thought:
If your charity already holds an annual “Fundraising Dinner”, combining it with a Golf Tournament is certainly something that could all happen on the same day. Perhaps bringing new life to that dinner only event. It certainly has the potential to greatly increase your fundraising dollars. Something you should seriously consider.
